Sacramento Takes Game One
on Gibson’s 9th-Inning Blast
|
The Sacramento
Solons needed some last-minute heroics to do
it, but they ultimately emerged the winner in Game
One of the World Series today. The Solons got took
the 5-4 win against the New
York Giants in a walk-off at Moreing Park.
Sacramento first baseman Lonny
Backer was named player of the game after he
was 3-3 with 3 singles. The win gives the Solons a
1-0 advantage in the best-of-seven series.
Josh Gibson,
who won the P.C.L. Player of the Year Award in 1933,
chipped in for Sacramento with a solo home run in
the bottom of the ninth. For the game, the catcher
had 2 hits in 4 at-bats with 1 home run, 1 single, 1
run scored, and 1 RBI.
Giants manager Bill Terry did not take questions
after the game, telling assembled reporters that he
would hold a press conference "if and when we win
the World Series."
The next game is scheduled for tomorrow at Moreing
Park in Sacramento. The scheduled starters for the
game are Roy
Parmelee for New York and Willie
Foster for Sacramento.
