Gomez Breezes to Shutout Victory Sunday, July 16th, 1939 The Hollywood Stars had no answer today for San Francisco Seals pitcher Lefty Gomez. They failed to score a single run against him, losing 3-0. Hollywood managed only 1 hit off Gomez, who had 3 strikeouts. The extraordinarily popular Gomez got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd. "Seals fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."
