Johnny Vander Meer Injured, Out for Season Sunday, June 29th, 1941
When Philadelphia starting pitcher Johnny Vander Meer was taken out of the game, the crowd at the Athletics-Red Sox game went silent as they could tell that it was a serious injury. That was confirmed today by doctors when they revealed that Vander Meer had sustained a ruptured disc and will be out for about 8-9 months.
Vander Meer has gone 8-7 this season with an ERA of 2.88 and 108 strikeouts in 140.2 innings pitched. Other clubs are hitting .212 against him.
