Angels Paige Dominates Cardinals
Thursday, October 17th, 1940
The St. Louis Cardinals ran into a buzzsaw at Wrigley Field L.A. today as Los Angeles Angels starter Satchel Paige cut them down to size, 1-0, tossing a 2-hit shutout.
"That's one thing that has never changed in this game -- pitching can control hitting," Angels manager Al Borie told reporters after the game. "Satchel knows exactly what he's doing. He's not going to throw you a good pitch until you make him throw one."
In the complete game whitewash, the Los Angeles hurler doled out 2 walks and registered 4 strikeouts.
Paige has started 35 times this year, pitched 314.2 innings, fanned 293 batters and walked 66. His current record is 25 wins and 8 losses with a 2.35 ERA.
