Hubbell Electric in 1-0 Win
Monday, May 6th, 1940
The Cincinnati Reds were almost helpless today in their 1-0 loss to the New York Giants and hurler Carl Hubbell. Hubbell kept the Reds confused all game, spinning a 3-hit shutout.
"Tip your hat to Hubbell," Cincinnati manager said in his postgame interview. "He kept us off balance all night."
The 37-year-old left-hander had no walks and 10 strikeouts in a strong performance.
"It just happened to be one of those games where even when I made mistakes, they either fouled them off or someone would make a fine defensive play," Hubbell said. "It was just one of those games that things went my way."
Hubbell has fashioned a 3-2 mark for the season, 3.46 ERA and thrown 39 innings in 5 starts. Opposing clubs are batting .224 against him.
