Red-Hot Derringer Cools Off Pittsburgh
Tuesday, August 8th, 1939
Paul Derringer hurled a fine game for the St. Louis Cardinals at Sportsman's Park IV (NL) today, holding the Pittsburgh Pirates to 3 hits in a shutout win.

"When he started out, his command wasn't that good, but he's a tough guy," St. Louis manager said. "The more pitches he throws, the better his command is."

The right-hander had 4 strikeouts and no walks in the 9-0 victory.

"An outstanding job," Pittsburgh manager said. "We couldn't get anything going. Every time we got a hit, he got out of the jam. He pitched a terrific game."

Derringer has made 23 starts this season, posting 12 wins and 10 losses. Opposing clubs are batting .274 against him and he has 85 strikeouts in 194.1 innings with a 3.61 ERA.
