Yankees Lou Gehrig Sidelined Thursday, May 4th, 1939 The New York Yankees will be minus Lou Gehrig for about 4 weeks after the first baseman suffered a fractured thumb while running the bases in a recent game against the Cleveland Indians. Gehrig and Yankees skipper had been hoping the post-game examination would show less damage than originally thought.
