Almost There: Portland On Cusp of World Series Triumph After 7-1 Win
The Portland Beavers moved to within one game of the world championship today, downing the visiting Philadelphia Athletics at Vaughn Street Park by a score of 7-1. Beavers right-hander Bill Posedel was named player of the game after a strong outing in which he threw 7 innings allowing 1 run. The win gives the Beavers a 3-0 advantage in the best-of-7 World Series.

Had Bob Johnson not delivered a key base hit in the bottom of the eighth, the outcome might have been different. Instead, with two down and runners on 1st and 2nd, Johnson hit a run-scoring single. That made the score 2-1, in favor of the Beavers.

"We're one game closer to our goal," Portland manager Mark Cooley said later. "It isn't any more complicated than that."

Game 4 is scheduled for Saturday in Philadelphia. Slated to start are Ted Trent for Portland and Ray Benge for Philadelphia.
