Charleston Smacks 5 Hits for Beavers
Sunday, September 7th, 1930
Portland Beavers center fielder Oscar Charleston had a day to remember at Recreation Park today, ripping apart the Mission Bells and sparking the Beavers to a 11-3 victory.

Charleston wrote his name in the record books with a 5-hit barrage, finishing his special day 5-for-6.

"I'm usually a first ball hitter," Charleston told BNN reporters in the postgame press conference. "I think pitchers think batters are going to let the first one go by. I never do. I've always found that it's better to pull the trigger early in the count. Pitchers get real nasty when they get ahead of you, so I try to avoid it."

Oscar Charleston singled in the 1st, singled in the 4th, tripled in the 5th, singled in the 7th, hit an RBI single in the 8th and flied out in the 9th.

So far this season Charleston has put up a .347 batting average with 199 hits, 23 home runs and 83 RBIs.
