New York Triumphs Over Los Angeles In Major League Baseball Series Friday, October 20th, 1939 After winning the league title, the New York Yankees didn't call it a year. They went on to even greater glory by being named the best of the best -- the Yankees are the Major League Baseball champions. They whipped Los Angeles Angels 11-10 in the finale and won the series 4-1. The New York skipper told the press, "To win a series like this, you need timely hitting and good pitching.
