Buxton Magnificent in Los Angeles Win Wednesday, September 21st, 1938 The San Diego Padres had no answer today for Los Angeles Angels pitcher Ralph Buxton. They failed to score a single run against him, losing 2-0. San Diego managed only 3 hits off Buxton, who had 5 strikeouts. The extraordinarily popular Buxton got a standing ovation from the hometown crowd as he left the field, the applause continuing until he returned from the dugout to tip his cap to the crowd. "Angels fans are the best fans, in my opinion," he said. "It's a great feeling to throw a shutout under any circumstances but to do it with the crowd behind you like that is just incredible."
