Rare Feat: Greenberg Bats .401
Tuesday, October 4th, 1938
What a year it was for Detroit Tigers left fielder Hank Greenberg, who had to fight the pressure all season long. Few players manage to attain the elite status of a .400 batting average, but Greenberg kept his focus the entire season and ended it with a fabulous .401 average.
Greenberg, who finished 3rd in the AL in slugging percentage with .624 last year, totaled 219 hits, 46 doubles, 5 triples, 48 home runs, 140 RBIs and 150 runs scored. "It was an amazing year," Greenberg said during a press conference today. "It doesn't get any better than this."
