Medwick Sizzles -- Smokes Reds for 5 Hits
Sunday, August 21st, 1938
A jubilant Joe Medwick joined the postgame press conference at Sportsman's Park IV (NL) today to offer some unusual words of encouragement -- for the Cincinnati Reds pitching staff he had just vanquished.

"It may not have looked like it," said the St. Louis Cardinals left fielder, "but I saw some awful good pitches today. If luck hadn't been on my side it might have turned out a lot different."

That would not have been the conclusion of anyone who saw his dominant 5-for-5 hitting performance, which led the Cardinals to a 12-11 win.

"He made it look easy," said , manager of the Reds. "We never figured out what to do with him. Obviously."

Joe Medwick singled in the 1st, walked in the 3rd, singled in the 5th, hit an RBI single in the 6th, hit an RBI single in the 7th and singled in the 9th.

This year Medwick is hitting .382 with 178 hits, 14 home runs, 110 RBIs and has scored 92 runs.
