New York Draws Blanks Against Tobin
Sunday, July 24th, 1938
Jim Tobin of the Chicago White Sox was on top of his game today.
The 25-year-old tantalized the New York Yankees with crisp curves and changeups, mixed in with just enough fastballs to keep the batters honest and came away with a 8-0 shutout.
"He had the changeup working," New York manager said in postgame comments. "You knew it was coming and you still grounded out -- and then he threw it even slower."
The Chicago hurler had 2 strikeouts, gave up 2 walks and surrendered 8 hits in his complete-game effort.
Tobin told reporters after the game that "keeping the ball down is the key to being successful in this league."
"If you don't do that, they'll make you pay," he said.
This year Tobin has compiled a 10-9 record with a 3.65 ERA.
